"America's most wanted" man is arrested

A slaying suspect featured on "America's Most Wanted" is behind bars after being arrested on a drunken driving charge, Hillsborough County deputies said.

Michael Anthony Mitchell, 28, was being sought in a fatal shooting in Cincinnati in 2003. He was pulled over Sunday near Dale Mabry Highway and Waters Avenue after a deputy spotted a 2002 Lexus drifting and weaving.

Mitchell hit Deputy Felix Moret in the chest and ran, but Sgt. Ken Escobio used a Taser to stop him, the Sheriff's Office said.

Mitchell claimed he was Tyrell Lavane Phillips of Tampa, but fingerprints revealed his identity, deputies said.

He was taken to Orient Road Jail on charges of battery on a law enforcement officer, obstructing or opposing an officer with violence and driving under the influence.

Mitchell is a suspect in the slaying of Varion Mines outside a Cincinnati bar in April 2003.

At a court appearance Monday, Hillsborough Circuit Judge Walter Heinrich told Mitchell he could agree to return to Ohio for trial after the local charges are resolved or fight extradition.

Heinrich scheduled another hearing for today.
