Presentation: Modern society was the least risk averse of societies. In the name of progress and development, risk taking was considered normal and even desirable. As we entered the postmodern era, risk came to be feared to such an extent that strong measures were taken to limit it. Criminal law did not escape this change in attitude. As a result, a wide range of activities, especially those involving business, came to be considered criminal. In this new age in which national sovereighnty is being limited to strengthen borderless markets, an act that once was local now has effects in distant countries in real time. For example, environmental crimes, tax evasion, and money laundering can harm other businesses in the same industry because a cost of a few cents per unit will often determine the success or failure of a business. We believe a lawyer practicing criminal law must keep up with these changes to best defend his or her clients. The ability to see the big picture, understand related areas of law, and constantly learn are therefore the principles that guide Joyce Roysen Advogados. We want to do more then defend our client in a particular case. Our mission is to position our client in the Brazilian and international criminal law context so that the client adopts practices that take criminal law risks into account in routine business activities.
